Hiking in the gorge of Vouraikos on May 8
Activity Description
Vouraikos is one of the most beautiful gorges in Greece and one of the best hiking trails where one can enjoy the alternating landscapes, the rich vegetation and images from the historic Odontotos.
The gorge owes its name to Voura, the daughter of Eliki and Ionas, whom Hercules loved, and for whom, according to legend, he opened the gorge so that he could cross to reach the sea and meet her. In ancient times, the river was almost all along its length, that is, as long as it was within the territory of the Arcadian city of Kynaitha, it was called Erasinos, only in the part that crossed the area of the ancient city of Voura and up to the sea, ie the lower river in its area. Egialia, was called Vouraikos.
The Vouraikos Gorge is about 20 km long. The river crosses the gorge surrounded by dense vegetation, steep cliffs, waterfalls and caves. The cog railway Diakoptos - Kalavrita passes in the gorge, which is a work of the period of Charilaos Trikoupis and was inaugurated on March 10, 1896 under the government of Theodoros Diligiannis.
Walking on the train tracks in some places, you wander left and right, at every turn of the line, unrestrained scary waterfalls, private galleries, abandoned stone houses with telegraphs that take us back in time, rocks carved by the rushing waters and bridges !
The program is configured as follows:
- 09:20 Meeting at Odontotos Station at Diakopto
- 09:45 Boarding the Cog Railway to Mega Spilaio station in the village of Zachlorou
- 10:20 Start of the hike from Zachlorou to Diakopto.
- 15:00 pm Arrival at our starting point in Diakopto where we will have lunch for those who wish.
Information:
The hiking route is 13 km and will take us 4 hours (depending of course on the pace of the team).
The necessary condition to wear boots or a tractor shoe because in places the ground is loose and our movement will be parallel to the lines of Odontotos. Hat, walking stick, sunglasses, comfortable clothes and anyone who wants a small backpack to put some essentials such as water, snack and maybe some extra blouse, windproof.
It is suitable for children from 13 years and over with the supervision and responsibility of the parent!
