The Red Beach

The eruption of the Thera volcano around 1613 BC buried the prehistoric town of Akrotiri but created next to it a unique landscape. You only need to glance at the precipitous red cliffs and russet shingle, both products of volcanic activity, to understand how Red Beach got its name. You can be transported into the exotic embrace of the Red Beach by only a few minutes walk or a short ride by kayak on daily excursions.

The White Beach

Forming a natural continuation of the Red Beach, the smaller White Beach with its crystal clear waters picks out another vivid hue on the natural color spectrum. The imposing white cliffs contrast starkly with the mix of fine black sand, pumice stones, and grey pebbles underfoot and stand out against the russet red of the neighboring Red Beach. The White Beach can be reached on foot from the adjacent Kambia beach, which sits between it and the red beach.

Black Mountain

On the southwest tip of the island, a little beyond the ancient settlement of Akrotiri and just short of faros, the lighthouse that has guided ships since 1892, lies the secluded beach of Akrotiri. It faces away from the caldera and towards the deep blue expanse of open sea to the south. This open view, the clear waters, the imposing black mountain, and the absolute calmness make this beach a truly memorable experience. Add to this the distinctive rock formation, which some liken to the profile of an Indian, while others see it as the face of Spyridon Marinatos, the archaeologist who discovered the prehistoric site of Akrotiri.

Important Information

•          In a 7-hour tour, transportation and safety briefing are included. Breaks are scheduled as necessary to regroup, hydrate, and rest. Also include a swimming stop for snorkeling, along with a 1.5-hour picnic.

  ·        The maximum capacity for a double kayak is 280 kg. You should be flexible to get in and out of the kayak, as well as to step on the rocks.

  ·        The minimum age requirement is 14 years old, as younger kids may find paddling tiring. However, exceptions can be made if parents are in great shape and able to paddle on behalf of their children.

  ·        We offer pick-up service from anywhere on the islands, and after the tour, we provide drop-off at your hotel at no extra charge; it is included in the overall price.

  ·        The driver will wait no longer that 10 minutes after the scheduled pick-up time.

  ·        The meeting point is at your hotel or at the nearest point accessible by car.

  ·        No prior kayaking experience is required as our sea kayaks are stable, and the basic technique is easy to pick up. Physical activity is necessary, and by the end of the tour, you should expect to feel tired
