Hike to Karfi, the last Minoan settlement
Activity Description
The Lassithi plateau is known for its picturesque windmills. In the 1950s and 1960s the plateau was one of Europe's first wind farms. A total of 10-13 thousand windmills pumped the underground water that local farmers used to water their crops.
Our hike begins from Tzermiado village, located on the Lassithi plateau (70 kilometers east of Heraklion). During the hike, we will pass through the beautiful Nissimos valley to reach Karfi summit, where we will see the ruins of an ancient Minoan settlement and enjoy a panoramic view of the north coast and Selena and Dikti mountains. On your way back to Tzermiado, you will descend from the summit via an old rocky-built mule path.
