Activity Description

We hike on the mountain of Penteli and the beautiful route DIONYSUS-THREE CHURCHES-TOP PYRGARI 1109m (return from the same path), discovering the dense pine forest of Dionysus the well hidden in it chapels of Prophet Elias-Saint Nikitas and Saint Luke. Going up we meet the abandoned quarries (traces of human intervention in the natural landscape) to reach the top of Penteli 1109m with stunning views of the basin, Evia, the islands of the Saronic Gulf and the Peloponnese.

Mount Penteli extends to the northeastern part of the Prefecture of Attica and at a distance of 30 kilometers from the center of Athens. The highest peak of the mountain is Pyrgari with a height of 1109 meters while the other peaks do not exceed 1000 meters. The mountain is defined south, west and north by the suburbs of Politia, Ekali, Dionysos, Nea and Palea Penteli while east by the areas of Nea Makri and Pikermi. The total area of the mountain reaches 128,432 acres while Penteli as a mountain is famous for its unique marble, which has been used since antiquity for the construction of important monuments such as the Parthenon.

The original name of the mountain was Vrilissos, while in ancient times the Attic municipality of Penteli was inhabited by the Antiochidio tribe. We owe the renaming of Vrilissos to Penteli to the historian Pausanias during the 3rd century BC.
