Activity Description

We say goodbye to the summer with a refreshing trip to Parga!!

Parga is a seaside town located in the northwestern part of the Preveza prefecture of the former Margaritiu province.

It is built amphitheatrically on the Pezovolos hill at an altitude of 139 m and up to the shores of the Ionian Sea.

A place with a rich history, as many conquerors passed through (Turks, Venetians, Venetians). Heritage of these periods are the 3 castles of Parga

(One of Ali Pasha, one of the Venetians who dominates the city and another one in the small church of Panagia opposite the port that was built by the Venetians)

Based on Aurora Studios (http://www.aurorastudios.gr, 5 star rating on TripAdvisor and Google and 10/10 Booking rating, 10 minutes from the city of Parga and 400m from Valtos beach) we will get to know the city of Parga, we will swim in the fairytale beaches of Paxos and dive in the waters of the mythical Acheron.

The Acheron, about 50 kilometers long, is a river in the region of Epirus and crosses the prefectures of Ioannina, Thesprotia and Preveza.

Its first sources come from the snows of Mount Tomaros in the Prefecture of Ioannina (maximum altitude 1,986 meters), while other sources are located in the mountains of Souli and the mountains of Paramythia in Thesprotia.

The Acheron flows into the Ionian Sea at the village of Ammoudia in Preveza, where it forms a delta.

The name of the river Acheron comes from the word "ἄχος", which describes deep sadness, sorrow and lamentation.

In ancient times, its name alone was enough to express the idea of Hades and terror, as it was described as the road to the underworld.

According to ancient Greek mythology, the "soul carrier" Hermes delivered the souls of the dead to Charon to end up in the kingdom of Hades.

Each soul, passing by Charon's ferry, had to give an obol for the transport.

According to mythology, Acheron during the conflict between the sons of Saturn and the Titans, gave water to the Thirsty Titans, which provoked the wrath of Zeus.

As punishment, he sent Acheron as deep as the sky above the earth, making its waters bitter.

Paxos, Cultural Village of Europe in 2004, is an ideal destination for quiet and quality holidays. Lacy shores and underwater caves, small coves and green hills welcome those lucky enough to find themselves on the island. According to tradition, Paxos was once united with Corfu. But Poseidon grabbed the piece with his trident and detached it, so that he could there live undisturbed his love with Amphitrite.

The program in detail:

  • Friday 23/9

We depart in the afternoon at 16.00 from Everest, Voulgari, with intermediate stops at 16.15 at the statue of Venizelos and 16.30 at One Salonica.

We start our journey to Parga, which is also our destination (about 4.5 hours).

An intermediate stop will be made in Grevena for refueling and coffee (Strada).

After arriving and settling into our rooms there will be free time for lunch, rest and sightseeing.

  • Saturday 24/9

After waking up and having our breakfast, we board the 4x4 and start the journey towards the Acheron river (about 30 minutes).

Leaving the vehicles we start the River Trekking in the river.

Crossing the river will take about 2 hours and in some places we may have to swim.

River Trekking is an experience that every nature lover should experience and requires moderate fitness.

The bed of the Acheron has stones and not mud and thus the river is very clean and its waters clear with few exceptions (some places due to rainfall, etc.).

On our way through the river we will meet the bridge, then the old Mill and at the point where we meet the tributary we will exit the river.

After we get out of the river we will return to the vehicles from Skala of Chavelena.

According to reports, there in 1792 Moscho Tzavela, wife of Lambros Tzavela, together with other Souliotesses fought against Turkalvans, managing to protect their place and save Souli.

After completing the crossing of the Acheron we will continue with lunch at a "surprise" destination and later we will return to Parga where we will spend our weekend.

  • Sunday 25/9

After waking up and having breakfast we are transferred to the port to board our boat (Marco Polo) and start our private cruise!

By boat we will visit Voutumi beach in Antipaxos, which holds the 9th place among the top beaches in Europe and has been awarded the Traveller's Choice Award and the Blue Caves of Paxos and we will have the opportunity to dive in their crystal blue waters.

We will then stop in Gaios, the capital of Paxos for a tour, coffee and lunch.

We return in the afternoon to Parga and start our return to Thessaloniki.

INFORMATION:

Crossing the river requires moderate fitness.
