We're leaving for Metsovo and Ursa Trail!!
Ursa in Vlach means bear. The route we will follow in Metsovo bears this Vlach name.
In 2016 the "Ursa Trail", i.e. the path of the bear, received from the European Hiking Federation (ERA) the "European Certification for Hiking Trails" (Leading Quality Trail - Best of Europe), establishing Metsovo as one of the important hiking destinations of Europe. Only 15 routes have this recognition!!!
Metsovo is a mountainous town in the prefecture of Ioannina built amphitheatrically at an altitude of 1,160 m above the Metsovitiko river. This unique Vlach village is a great winter and summer destination. A traditional settlement, it is located at the eastern end of the prefecture, near the border with the prefecture of Trikala, on the northern slopes, between the mountains of the largest mountain range in Greece, Pindos.
The program in detail:
Sunday 9/10
We leave in the morning at 07.00 from Everest, Voulgari, 07.30 at One Salonica with a route to Metsovo, which is also our destination (about 3 hours).
We arrive in Metsovo around 10.30 and prepare for our hike.
A few words about our hike:
The hiking trail that we will follow is part of the route of the "Ursa Trail" mountain running competition.
Our hike has a total duration of approximately 5.5 hours, a length of 11km and an altitude difference of 650m.
It starts from the central square of Metsovo and ends at the same point (circular).
During our hike we will pass by the position "Grizios", from I.N. Agioi Apostolo (where there is a stone fountain with drinking water) and from the monument to the fallen of the Cavalry (1940).
Then, as we hike along a strongly uphill path through a forest of pines, rombolus and beech, we reach the top of the Metsovo ski center (Karakoli position 1480m).
From there we start our descent towards the Politsiora plateau and continue by climbing to the highest point of our route (Kaligomeno aloni 1600m).
After completing the hike there will be free time in Metsovo for coffee, sightseeing, etc. (about 2 hours).
Return to Thessaloniki in the evening (21.00-22.00)
Remarks:
- Mountain weather is difficult to predict and can change at any time.
- We make sure to have appropriate clothing and changes of clothes without overdoing it, so as not to burden ourselves with additional weight during our trips.
- Everyone should take care according to their needs for the snacks, meals and liquids they will need during the route.
