Activity Description
The virgin forest of Frakto, in the northeastern part of the Prefecture of Drama and right below the highest peak of central Rhodope at an altitude of 1.953m, is the only virgin forest in Greece and one of the most important ones in Europe.
Sky-high trees, lush vegetation with a great variety of evergreen and deciduous broad-leafed forestry species in all shades of green, as well as a combination of geological and water formation, comprise a complete forest landscape; a unique natural wonder.

Itinerary
The road from Paranesti to Thermia (approximately 40klm) is asphalt, offering a pleasant drive. We drive along Arkoudorema, find the dam lake of Platanovrisi to the north, and after we pass by the frumpish slum of Thermia, we enter the dirt road. After the crossroad at Zita the scenery starts to change, as we move gradually from oak forests into black pine trees almost up until the Afhenas position in the Forest of Frakto. Starting from the forest construction site at Frakto, we follow the mountain road and, after we go past Ahladorema, we find the trail that leads to the three waterfalls. At 300m we find the first one and hiking uphill among beech trees leads is to the second waterfall. The most impressive of the Ahladorema waterfalls is the third one, located close to the southern edge of the virgin forest. Approaching it is tougher compared to the previous two, as the trail is uphill with a lot of scree. The rest of the trail is easier with lots of spots with breathtaking views and takes us to the ruins of Ahladohori village. As we complete our hike, we stop for a picnic at the scenic viewpoint of Panorama. Once we are back in the vehicles, we pass by the other two waterfalls before we head back.
