Activity Description
The end of the 19th century saw the construction of the railway line connecting Toxotes to Stavroupolis, a project of vital importance in the connection between Europe and the East. Several tunnels were constructed along the banks of river Nestos, as well as a scenic trail along the river to ease the transport of goods and human resources. The whole structure looks perfectly blended in with the surroundings and human intervention seems minimal. The stone trail over the tunnels is ideal for a refreshing hike. The ups and downs are mild and for the most part the trail is well-preserved. The Nestos flows peacefully just meters away and nature is prevalent all around. Looking at the rocky banks, it is easy to understand why predatory birds choose to nest here. The steep rockface and lush vegetation offer the ideal nesting place for rare birds.
