Trekking the alpine lakes and the summit of Flega (Valia Calda)

A great route in the heart of the unique habitat of the Pindos National Forest!

Two beautiful small natural lakes are located in the alpine meadows of Flegga.

The ridge of the mountain separates the prefecture of Ioannina from the region of Grevena. The highest peak of the mountain range is Flega at 2,159 meters, while it is part of the Valia Calda National Forest.

To the south is the artificial lake of Aoos. The twin lakes of Flegga at an altitude of 1,960 and 1,940 meters, are only 100 meters apart. The lakes act as communicating vessels with the lowest one overflowing to the Arkoudorema of Valia Kalda.

On our hiking route, we come across large black pines, and centuries-old rombolas, some of which are standing bare, struck by lightning. Large populations of the rare alpine newt also find refuge in the alpine lakes.

Important information:

• We leave our vehicles a little above the Mavrovouni shelter, in a beautiful valley.
• We follow the path that leads us to the top of Flegga.
• We cross stands of robola and black pines, while the view towards the artificial lake is breathtaking.
• Gentle route without steep points and without big altitude differences.
• Arriving at the top we can admire the amazing view from 2,159 meters.
• Then, we descend to the two "pits", where the water from the rains and snow collects, forming the two lakes.
• For our return, we follow the same route.
• Distance: 11 km on stony ground.
• Altitude: maximum 2,159m. / lowest 1,905m.

Detailed schedule:

• 09.30: Meeting at the perimeter of the lake, at the beginning of the dirt road that leads to the Mavrovouni shelter.
• 10.00: Transfer to the starting point of the hike.
• 10.40: Start hiking.
• 12.15: Peak of Flegga and snack break.
• 13:00: Visit the lakes.
• 13:30: Return hike.
• 15:15: End of activity. Arrival in our vehicles.
