Crete Sea Kayak trip Kalyves - Drapano - Georgioupoli
Activity Description
One of the most interesting trips in the north part of Crete, just a few minutes away from Chania town in west Crete. This trip is customized each time based on group experience. If the group has no or limited experience with sea kayaks it will be a shorter distance (about 15 km) on a less exposed coastline.
Experienced paddlers will be able to do a linear trip starting from Kalyves and ending in Georgioupoli village (27 km). Most of the time this is a downwind paddle. To join the longer trip your skills need to be at 3* level (based on British Canoeing) or higher as it is getting fairly rough outside the Souda bay and cape Drapano.
Overview of the trip
There will be a short introduction to paddling for those that have no experience and afterward we will start paddling toward cape Drapano. On our way, we will make stops for both; swimming and snorkeling.
If the group is experienced and we end up doing the long version (27 km) of the trip, then fewer stops will be done in order to be on time back.
The closer we get to the cape the higher and nicer the cliffs are. You need to pack your lunch for this day trip as there will be no tavernas during the paddle.
Single or tandem (double) kayaks are available. People with no experience will be given a tandem kayak as it is easier to paddle. Experienced paddlers can get superb boats from Nigel Dennis, Valley, North Shore, and P&H.
Bear in mind that this trip gets too wavy most of the time during June-September and a much better option if you are staying in Chania city or anywhere in the region is the Sfakia trip. That is the calmest area on the whole island with spectacular views.

Notes: The exact meeting point, it is at Kalyves Beach as shown on map. There is a big parking (free access) by the sea. We start by 10 am and finish between 4-5 pm due to paddling distance. If time change for any reason you will be notified by email. We pick up clients from Heraklion and near Rethymno. Many times we are able to pick up clients from other locations as well but it needs to be on our way to the starting point. If you need transport and you are not sure get in touch with us. Remember to send us the exact location of your hotel, not just the name. Transport is provided for free.
