Hiking in Vamvakou and Monastery Agias Kyriakis (Saint Kyriaki)
Activity Description
Vamvakou is a village built on the western slopes of Mount Parnon, at an altitude of 900m. The smooth topography of the area offers options for walking, cycling, and mountain climbing.
The path to the monastery of Agia Kyriaki starts from the village square where the Holy Church "Agios Charalambos" dominates. The course is initially uphill, where stands of chestnuts, walnuts, and, at a higher altitude, mixed forests of fir (Abies cephalonica) and black pine (Pinus nigra). At Loggous (the closest point of the route to the central massif of Parnon) one can enjoy the unique view offered by the landscape, gazing at the peak of Parnon, the Laconian plain, and the impressive Taygetos.
The route to the Monastery of Agia Kyriaki is equally enchanting along the river where plane trees, numerous species of herbaceous plants, and dwarf shrubs grow. The cave monastery is a preserved monument, built inside a cave with colors and materials that are perfectly consistent with the natural environment. Testimonies refer to the existence of the Monastery since 1800, while it served as a refuge for persecuted Christians and residents of the wider area during periods of unrest. Today, although the monastery is not functioning, it remains a historical site.
