River Trekking in Neda, Peloponnese
Activity Description
The Neda river springs from Lykeon mountain whose waters follow a unique and extraordinary route through cliffs with thick vegetation bowed bridges, caves, and narrow gorges which create waterfalls.
Through a route of 32 km, the river ends up on Elea beach and to the Ionion Sea. Due to the morphology of the area the river varies, it can be narrow, deep with rapid waters and in other parts, it widens forming ponds, ideal for a swim.
The Neda river took its name from the mythical nymph Neda, the deity of waters, rivers, and Ocean’s daughter. Rea, Jesus's mother, when she gave birth to Jesus on Likeon mountain, she handed his upbringing to the nymphs Neda, Thisoa, and Agno, to rescue him from his father Cronos who used to swallow his kids, in fear of being dethroned. According to mythology, the nymph Neda was turned into a river, and her long hair plaits into spectacular waterfalls which decorate the gorge.
